Party Ham Rolls

We had company over the weekend and we were going to make a spiral cut ham.  This was a casual goodbye party for one of our neighbors moving to Florida, so we were just going to have ham sandwiches and everyone brings a dish to pass.  We always have tons of food, so a light bulb went off in my  head, that I remember making Party Ham Sandwiches many, many years ago. They were Ham and Cheese Sandwiches on hamburger buns, with a poppy seed-butter-mustard mixture spread on the inside of the buns, individually wrapped in foil, and baked in the oven.  I looked in some of my old church cook books, but couldn't find the recipe. Thank goodness for Google. Unfortunately, I didn't remember seeing Brandie@thecountrycook.net's  Ham And Cheese Party Rolls with Sweet Glaze. Maybe It was subliminal:) Next time I will have to try the Hawaiian rolls. Because we had a honey glazed ham, I thought that the Hawaiian rolls would be too sweet. As always, I found many versions of the recipe. Some versions now, have the butter mixtures poured over the top of the buns, and then baked.  Not using that one.

The recipe that I did settle on was for the smaller "party size rolls", like Pepperidge Farm.   I ended up using white dinners rolls from the Super Target Bakery.  They worked out well. You can make these ahead of time, if you you use deli ham. Initially, you make the poppy seed-butter-mustard mixture in a small saucepan.  Then you take the whole package of 12 rolls, left intact, and slice them horizontally, brush both sides with the butter mixture, fill will the ham and cheese, and then wrap the the 12 rolls in foil, and refrigerate, until ready to use, and then bake in the oven for 15-18 min. This this recipe made 24 dinner roll size sandwiches. How easy is that, if you are looking for something to take to a party? They are so good, they disappear in minutes. I don't know why I never made these for Bunco?
These are the only ones left...
I did have to buy poppy seeds to make these. Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins are my hubby's favorite muffin, so I see Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins in my future.

PS The Kahlua Cinnamon Brownies were a great hit, down to the last crumb:)

PARTY HAM ROLLS Adapted from about.food.com.southernfood
Ingredients:
  • 2 packages  16 oz white dinner rolls
  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks)
  • 4 tablespoons prepared mustard, I used Spicy Brown
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion (optional) I didn’t add
  • 4 tablespoons poppy seed
  • 2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  •  1 lb sliced spiral cut ham, of 1 lb. deli ham, sliced thin
  • 8 oz sliced Swiss cheese, each slice, quartered
Preparation:
Melt butter; add mustard, poppy seed, onion, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook over low heat until onions are transparent.
Without separating rolls, slice party rolls horizontally. Spread both sides evenly with butter mixture. Fill evenly with ham and cheese. Wrap each package in tightly in foil and refrigerate until ready to bake. Bake at 375 ° for about 15 minutes, or until thoroughly heated and cheese is melted

  1. I love, love these little ham sandwiches with the poppy seed dressing! I do end up eating way too many of them, but they're so good. I like the fact that there is Worcestershire sauce in the mix. That has to add some yummy flavor.
